Sunday session on iPad

https://ipad2educate.wikispaces.com

Good apps
  • Pages: great word processor app cost 9.95 but can upload a Word document into Pages and then save as a epub ...this works as an ebook
  • air display: allows your ipad to be a 2nd monitor
  • splashtop :allows you to use your laptop with your ipad
  • proloquo:seems to be good with autistic kids
  • eclicker (see below)
  • photoshop express...just a basic editor, actually no better than picasa...can download picasa onto ipad
  • wolfromalpha..computational search engine, one for algebra...good for math teachers
  • behviortrackerpro; recording your data, can take data and export to computers...great for a learning support teacher
  • epicurious is cool...good cooking app

How can we integrate the iPad in to the classrooms?
  • you can use the volume purchasing for apps and each student in your class can use it for the year, like a text book, and then erase the app from their ipad at the end of the year, like turning in a text book....then the next year, the next class of students can load the app
  • this is not for every student
  • creating ebooks is a great tool for teachers...esp. for teacher created books
  • ipads can feed off of wireless carts...same limitations
  • 10 users trying to download the same app could cause a real problem
  • can make blog comments on the ipad
  • not a problem is the classroom is using the clicker
  • if the teacher wants the whole class to view the same video, then why not just have the teacher show the video on the screen with their computer
iPod touch vs iPad
  • older students like the iPod touch...can use it for video , smaller and can still get the apps or even iPhone
  • visual or physical impairments ...iPad is better

Peripheals
  • Can use the usp cable for camera for ipad to connect your keyboard to your ipad
  • Can also use any bluetooth keyboard for ipad...do not need the apple keyboard
  • Buy cover for ipad or ipod........glare screen (invisible shield for glare) zagg.com
drop resolution to lower so the ipad can be shown on the screen with less glare
use it with IPEVO ,,,this shows your ipad on the screen

To buy apps:
  • Must have an itunes account to buy apps
  • Buy them at store and then download the app
  • most are .99 or 1.99
To connect to wireless, go to Wi-Fi

Powerful Learning Trees
can print from ipad through network or wireless...called airprint
eclicker:
host is what teacher would have/
must be on the same network
student then has the eclicker on their ipad
teacher can post question, image, answers, poll time which gives inbetween time for talking, teacher can see user results, student can see class results
this is good for all learners becasue they do not need to raise your hand and teacher will get all the answers and see how students know the materiel

epub

  • Pages from the mac to convert to epub.........., looks like a great way to make ebooks, build these ebooks and add to itunes as spoken text can bring in any media like photos or video. Must be inline with text, not floating....unbelivable program that creates video and links in your ebook and allows embedded audio
  • Creating EPUB Books for a PC

A number of software tools are designed for making EPUB books, such as Adobe's InDesign or Calibre. We also offer a web-based platform for the conversion from Word to EPUB. However, EPUB specifications are much more restrictive than regular HTML. It is very difficult to design a tool that can convert a complex Word format into the EPUB format. For this reason, our site is focusing on Web books, which uses the standard HTML5
  • can use Adobe InDesign to save as ebook.....Save as Export for digital editions......... now save as Epub
  • I can import my books from Word into InDesign and save as epub....wow!!!!! Now can be read on iPad like a Nook
